About the talk:

China and the United States have a complex codependent relationship in the electronics and computer industries. This relationship is currently under stress. In this talk, I begin by putting the current friction into the context of similar friction between the U.S. and Japan in semiconductors during the 1980s. I will then focus on the issues and forces that will shape the future for IT industries in both countries.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Dasher has been Director of the US-Asia Technology Management Center at Stanford University since 1994. From 1998 – 2015, he concurrently served as Executive Director of Stanford’s Center for Integrated Systems (CIS). His research includes innovation systems, open innovation management, and the impact of new technologies on industry value chains. Dr. Dasher serves on program and review committees for government and private sector science and technology programs and research institutes in Japan, Thailand, and Canada, and he is an advisor to start-up companies, business accelerators, and venture capital firms in Silicon Valley, China, India, Japan, and S. Korea. Dr. Dasher served as an outside board director and member of the Management Council of Tohoku University (2004 – 2010). He is currently a member of the board of directors of the World Sustainable Development Forum and several other nonprofits. From 1986 – 90, Dr. Dasher was Director of the U.S. State Department’s Advanced Training Centers in Yokohama and Seoul that provide full-time language and area studies curricula to U.S. and select Commonwealth country diplomats. From 1990 – 93 he developed new international business as a board director of two startup companies in Tokyo. He received the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Linguistics from Stanford University, and his undergraduate degree is in clarinet and orchestra conducting from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
